Even as the Pentagon lifts the ban on women in combat roles, returning servicewomen are facing a battlefield of a different kind: they are now the fastest growing segment of the homeless population, an often-invisible group bouncing between sofa and air mattress, overnighting in public storage lockers, living in cars and learning to park inconspicuously on the outskirts of shopping centers to avoid the violence of the streets.

-- Patricia Leigh-Brown
Female veterans who have been deployed in the service of our country often face different challenges than their male counterparts when they return home.

These challenges may include unemployment, divorce, post-traumatic stress syndrome, and even homelessness.

Women in Bloom recognizes the sacrifices these brave women have made and seeks to help women in active service as well as returning veterans.

Members of Business Women United Network from Alliances across northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan collected toiletries and other supplies and donated them to Women in Bloom, which in turn sent the supplies to an Army base in Texas for distribution to female soldiers. We host a 5K Soldier's Shuffle to raise awarness about PTSD annually at the end of April. Additionally, we have a partnership with Malachi Life Center via their housing for homeless female veterans in Newport News, VA. One of our big initiatives is assisting the Purdue Military Family Research Institute's Focus Forward  program annually, which is held in July.

Focus Forward Fellowship is designed to help women student veterans and service members build skills, leadership and a sense of community with their peers. Our founder, Angela Crossin, is a speaker and mentor in this wonderful program.

In 2019, we launched a new initiative in partnership with the National Center for PTSD and will be hosting two events during National PTSD Awareness month in June going forward.

Several of Women in Bloom's board members participated in the 2017 Porter County Women's Build to provide a home for a local female veteran and her teenage daughter.  It was the first home for a veteran in Porter County and first female veteran. In July 2017, Women in Bloom provided finacial support to the Northwest Indiana Chapter of  USA Cares as they hosted their first chapter event in LaPorte, Indiana.

Women in Bloom pledges to continue its mission to serve women in the armed forces and returning veterans.

What Our Clients Are Saying

They are a blessing and absolutely amazing! -- JaLeesa
Very giving organization has helped me to continue the journey of tackling my masters degree. In my family I was the first in the whole entire family counting aunts, cousins and all to have received a bachelor's degree that I got in August of this year. Once I get my masters I'll be the first one for that again within my whole entire family.

My mother had me at the young age of 14 and I saw the struggles we had to go through and I knew I didn't want that for my children. I wanted better as all parents want better for their kids then what they had had. What Women in Bloom has done for me has helped tremendously with that and I am beyond thankful.

I am very blessed. Thank you so so much!! I can't wait to tackle that masters! I know I got this!
