We are living in tough economic times and through no fault of their own, some women find themselves in challenging circumstances.
Many women have been denied educational and job training opportunities and are raising children on their own.
Women in Bloom seeks to help women improve their situations in a variety of ways.
For many women, the path to finding and keeping a job with decent wages and advancement opportunities is ridden with obstacles — from lack of adequate child care, to juggling work and family responsibilities, to dealing with on-the-job discrimination.
These barriers to employment are especially challenging for women living on the economic margins, particularly welfare recipients, for whom the consequences of lacking or losing a job can be devastating and lead them to a feel hopeless and lacking the confidence to pull themselves out of their situation.
Low-income women try to find and keep meaningful jobs while caring for their families must meet multiple obligations with usually inadequate work/family supports.
For example, members of Business Women United Network, sister organization to Women in Bloom, collected clothing, shoes, and accessories and donated them to Women in Bloom, which held a suit drive for underprivileged and under-resourced women.
In cooperation with a Valparaiso-based social service agency women were invited to select items they could wear to job interviews. Additionally, WIB partnered with Ivy Tech's Career Closet in November 2015 to donate clothes for students seeking jobs.
Women in Bloom will continue to seek ways to help women improve their circumstances.
